Tattoo Aftercare
as I see it…
Wrap it..
Wash it..
Keep it from drying out..
I am sure everyone is going to tell you a different special product or technique that is best. And it’s true, what they have is the best, I am not here to argue semantics. I hope to add a little personality to my site and be a bridge for you to figure out your own routine, technique, or special product. Confidence is key to healing tattoos—the more tattoos we collect on our journey the better at caring for them we get! DON’T STRESS!
To start, we will apply a thin layer of A&D ointment after the session is completed. I suggest leaving your new tattoo wrapped up as long as you can stand it. Don’t remove plastic wrap until you are prepared to wash and begin your routine. I personally enjoy and advise keeping it wrapped or rewrapping it for at least the first night’s sleep. Remove and wash in the morning. Situations may come up that might suggest wrapping your tattoo the following day, but honestly throughout the afternoon it’s not necessary. Keeping it wrapped up will help prevent your tattoo from drying out too quickly, which will make your tattoo scab up—you don’t want that.
Washing your tattoo with a gentle,NON SCENTED soap, may favorite is Dial “GOLD”. Be gentle when cleaning blood and goo, DONT use a wash cloth or anything abrasive. Be nice, make sure your hands are clean! It is completely okay to get your tattoo wet, DONT submerge your tattoo under water, stay out of the pool and lakes for other hopefully obvious reasons! GERMS!! After rising soap and goo away, gently dab/blot extra water off tattoo with a clean (one time use only) paper towel. Allow about 10 minutes for your tattoo and surrounding skin to dry.
OINMENTS and LOTIONS
Once your tattoo has dried, with clean hands, you will apply a very thin layer of ointment. Heres another point of option, I like Aquaphor as an ointment for the first 4 days of aftercare. I wish I was sponsored by Aquaphor but I am not, truly the simplest and best product I have found. A very thin layer, start with a little pea size dot and gentle spread, rubbing in evenly. add more pea size dots as needed, depending on the size of your tattoo. Aquaphor doesn’t need to be applied as often as a lotion, and helps from your tattoo drying out too quickly.
After day 4-5(ish) when the tattoo begins to heal over or begins flaking, I suggest switching over to a plain,NON-scented lotion for the remainder of your aftercare.
Be aware everyones skin is different and what I am mentioning here has been gathered from my experiences professionally and personally, also directly from clients I have retained relationships with and their options.
